Save UCLA
Childcare
UCLA thinks childcare is not worth supporting.
What Happened?
In August 2026, UCLA made a surprise announcement that the ECE program, which has provided childcare to students, faculty, staff and the community for over 30 years, would be closing.
There was no warning. There was no consultation with parents, student or faculty groups. The teachers and directors in the ECE program were notified only thirty minutes prior to the e-mail that went out to parents.
What Does This Mean?
- 250+ children will lose high quality childcare. Their families will have to search for new spots in a very tight market.
- Dozens of teachers and staff, some with decades of history at ECE will lose their jobs.
- West LA will lose 250+ desperately needed childcare spots.
- As one of the few childcare programs in West LA that accepts the California state subsidy for low income families, ECE’s closure disenfranchises most those with the least access to quality childcare.
- Students, Faculty, and Staff that rely on ECE for childcare, and accepted employment or enrollment at UCLA, may leave the UCLA community.
Who Are We?
Save UCLA Childcare Coalition
We are a group or parents, students, faculty, staff, and community members that oppose UCLA’s shortsighted decision to close a valuable and critical resource to both the UCLA and West Los Angeles communities.
We intend to fight against UCLA and convince them to reverse a decision that is ill-considered, harmful to the university, painful for young children and their families, and bad for the community.
